A long, long time ago, my girlfriend and I had the "great" idea to sneak over the pasture fence one night with a halter made of old baling twine and take the neighbor's horse for a ride. Alcohol may have been involved. We actually got up on that horse, who I am sure thought we were crazy (horse's are smart that way), and rode her through the yucca and tumbleweeds while the moon illuminated our folly.  All's well that ends well, and neither we nor the horse were any worse for the experience. Luckily, the horse didn't rat us out, either. 

As I was painting "Joy Ride", I was in that stage where my under painting wasn't giving up its secrets and I was struggling to "see" what story the canvas held.  I went for a little walk, and when I returned, the horse's head was so obvious, with the her passengers coming into focus shortly thereafter. When I saw what it was, I laughed, remembering my adventure. In this story, the horse has a little mischievous streak, and it is unclear whether her passengers will get off the same way they got on.
