Mixed Signals

One of my most vivid memories is of being at the Bronx Zoo, I think I was around 22 years old. I was standing looking into the wolf enclosure, when a large female, perhaps the alpha of the little captive pack, locked eyes with me. I don't know how long we stood there, sending messages back and forth, across the deep divide between our worlds.
