As I heralded in the New Year, I took some time to reflect on past year endings/beginnings. After all, this is my 60th trip around the sun. Turning 60 in October brought none of the dread I assumed I'd feel. Strangely, it was anti-climatic. In some ways, there is something about being 60 that is freeing. I feel comfortable in my skin. I feel confident in my opinions, but open and accepting of the opinions of others. I feel motivated to have more adventures. I feel excited about my life, and the possibilities ahead. I feel connected to both my child self and my elder self, and I'm learning to trust my own wisdom. I feel more creative and fulfilled now than at any other point in my life; not that I wasn't before, but because now I FEEL it. My inner critic, so strong and forceful earlier in my life, is now much more easily quieted.
At 60, I have experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. I've been overflowing with joy and buried by sorrow. I've lost my faith and found it - again and again. I've come to truly understand that I am the captain of my own ship, and that I always have a choice. I choose to choose Love.
Every day I practice: strengthening my voice, my body, my mind, my emotions. Not with rigidity, but with the enduring strength of flexibility and grace. And so now, from the vantage point of 60, I look forward with anticipation and courage, and back with compassion and understanding. I embrace the Nowness of my Being: I am Perfectly imperfectly perfect.
