In my earlier blog, I talked about my process - so I thought I'd show a few more pictures of paintings in process. I'm in analytical mode with these two... working now on refining composition and details.

At any given time, I am working on 5-7 paintings. I have three easels set up in my studio, each with a painting in progress, along with a few leaning up against the wall. Sometimes I feel a bit "mad" as I move between the paintings. But really, there is a method to the madness.
I am an intuitive painter, and for me, the process can't be planned, rushed, or forced. What normally happens is I start a painting and paint until the flow begins to wane. I would define the "flow" as when I am painting without censor, without thought, without worry. I use whatever colors appeal to me, I make whatever marks feel right, all right brain stuff. When I find myself starting to hesitate, I stop, and move the painting to one of my secondary easels.
It may take a few hours, a few days, a few weeks...or a year, before I understand what the painting is trying to say. Sometimes the painting tells me it is finished in its abstract state. Sometimes the painting tells me to start the process over. And sometimes I can move ahead rapidly.
The paintings pictured are two 36x36 paintings that I started in a Lance Green "Medicine Wheel" workshop in March. I still don't know what they will ultimately want, but for now, I am leaving them alone.
