“It is not my intention in my work to give you the answers, but rather to spark in you the desire to ask the questions.
I think my painting practice is a natural extension of a questioning mindset: I am always seeking, exploring, pushing myself to dig deeper, to find clearer, more powerful expressions of wisdom that comes from something much larger than myself.
I start each painting without a fixed plan; rather, I let the imagery rise up uncensored from my subconscious, informed by events, dreams, memories, emotions and spiritual explorations. Each piece begins by enthusiastically and intuitively applying brush strokes, glyphs, words and patterns to the substrate in a wild, uninhibited dance. From this chaotic beginning, I begin a process of scraping off, adding in, scribbling, scratching – each period of activity balanced by a period of quiet observation and receptiveness, until the imagery emerges, unhurried and unforced. Artifacts from the many layers often pop through in unexpected ways, adding texture and history to the story. “
